London Hostels

Hostels have been the main stay of travellers for many years. Traditional hostels offered low rates and shared sleeping arrangements in exchange for chores. In the 1960’s a new type of hostel emerged that did away with the chore requirement. A typical London hostel will provide bedding and access to shared cooking and bathing spaces. The term “hostel” can also refer to accommodation houses for homeless people, and travellers may want to make a distinction by using the term “youth hostel.”

London hostels provide comfortable lodging to travellers looking to save money. While health issues and crime are generally not a concern, travellers may want to lock up personal belongings when leaving the hostel. Since guests of London hostels will almost never have a private room, it is a good idea to lock up money and travel documents at the reception. Most London hostels will offer to secure your items in a locked space, sometimes for a fee, to house such personal belongings.

London hostels are quite numerous, and the city draws many hostel guests from around the world. For many travellers, this is a major advantage of staying in hostels in London. Since guests are often sleeping in the same room and using many of the same facilities, youth hostels in London are one of the best places to meet other travellers. In a city as world renowned as London, guests are sure to meet interesting international contacts.

Another advantage to a hostel in London is the shared kitchen area. Almost all hostels will have a fully stocked kitchen or cooking area - ideal for backpackers and tourists who like to enjoy a home cooked meal as a contrast to UK restaurants. Obviously, for travellers on a budget, cooking can also be a great way to save money.

If a hostel in London is only one of the many hostel stays you plan to make, you may want to buy into a hostel group. As a member of a hostel group, you will be eligible for discounted and cheap London hostel rates at just about any popular hostel in Europe or the UK. Your pass also makes you eligible for additional discounts at surrounding restaurants or other entertainment venues.

Cooking in the Classroom? Elementary!

The workplace of professional chef Catherine Pressler is a former storage room at Hunters Woods Elementary School. Outside Room 106, a sign proclaims, “Chef Pressler, Food FUNdamentals.” This is where students come to take part in a cooking-based course which began several years ago when Pressler was looking for a way to be active in her children’s school. Her kids aren’t in elementary school anymore, but Pressler has stayed. Named by Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Volunteer of the Year, she is the creator of a highly detailed and organised series of classes for kindergarten through sixth grade that adds to themes from daily course work.

How is cooking connected with math, science or history? Just look: Kindergartners whip up a recipe inspired by a popular children’s tale, “Stone Soup”; as they handle the ingredients, they learn about geometric shapes, sorting, identification of fruits and vegetables, and the five senses. Lessons become more complex for the older kids. Fourth-graders prepare a grand menu from Colonial Virginia to review the state’s history, culture and natural resources. Hunters Woods Principal Stephen Hockett says, “Everything she does is amazing. To have children use their thinking skills and make connections to the real world is incredible. When kids are having a good time is when they learn the most.” Pressler spends up to 60 hours a week preparing lessons, buying supplies and teaching. She volunteers her time; the supply budget comes from student fees, the PTA and sometimes her own pocket. The programme has grown so large that Pressler is looking for grants and other sources of income.

You have to see Pressler in action to truly understand the scope of her programme, and her dedication to the kids. On a spring afternoon in Room 106, third-grade students arrive to find gleaming stainless-steel pasta machines and other carefully organised supplies waiting on clean tabletops. Pressler isn’t two minutes into the lesson before she gives the first hints that the programme is about a lot more than cooking.

Pressler manages to talk without stopping, but without losing her young audience. Their eyes follow her as she springs around the room discussing history and geography, pulling down a world map here and pointing to an architectural poster there. Pulling out packages of pasta, she wows the kids with the variety of ingredients used to make different kinds of it, including soy, buckwheat, rice, corn and rye. Soon the class is shrieking with delight as they run dough through pasta machines and measure it for the longest-noodle contest.

Pressler is a role model with a diverse background. “I went to school in architecture and interior design. I’d always loved science, so then I went to graduate school in textile chemistry. Then I said, “I’m going to chef school now, as a hobby.” And I found that’s where my heart was. I worked as a pastry chef for a number of years and really loved that.” She missed interacting with more people, however.

Pressler says she dreams of expanding the programme to reach more students at other schools or taking her programme to television. Her recipe for success is to integrate learning with life, instill enthusiasm for learning in the children, and inspire them to achieve their heart’s desire.

What problem does Catherine Pressler face in teaching her course?

A Perfect Rock Climbing Partner

Craig Armstrong has been rock climbing for about five years and lately he’s been climbing with a very special partner: a 2-year-old black cat named Millie.

“People take their dogs to the rocks all the time. I always knew when I was settled enough to have a pet I would bring mine on the route too, but it would be a cat,” he said.

He found Millie at a Park City pet shelter, Utah. When the 8-week-old kitten climbed onto his shoulder, Armstrong knew he’d found his new partner and took her home that day.

When Millie got a little older, he started to train her taking on short driving trips to get her used to his truck, and then to a small Salt Lake City island where she could get accustomed to being outside in a safe environment. Last autumn, Armstrong took Millie on her first big outdoor excursion to Joe’s Valley, a large concentration of rocks in Utah. Like all kittens, Millie was curious, but unlike most kittens, she was given an opportunity to explore the outdoors, climb cliffs and leap from one boulder to another. “She was really tiny and had a tendency to jump on people and climb up to their shoulders. She did that to a few pretty girls, which showed me she loves me,” Armstrong wrote when he detailed his first kitty-climbing adventure.

When they’re at camp, Armstrong lets his fearless pet wander around while he cooks dinner, but he’s careful to keep an eye on her. “I’m always sure to give her enough time around camp to do what she wants and just follow her around. In fact, putting his human agenda aside and letting Millie wander freely is something he calls “catting”, and it’s an important part of their outdoor excursions.

“Your job is to follow, protect, keep safe from harmful places and predators,” Armstrong comments on his website. “Your reward is experiencing nature at a slower pace, from a different perspective, in a new light”.
