Dear Sir/Madam,

I have just listened to your programme about friends and friendships. I’m writing to express support for this serious issue.

I strongly agree with you that friendship is defined in million ways. Friendship is a relationship that has many dimensions and styles. Friendship has no boundaries and no limits. True friendship is built on trust and mutual understanding. Your real friend is always there to help you and expects the same from you. He does not judge you for what you do, but instead understands and encourages you. I do believe that a true friend is a person who loves you unconditionally and will not try to change you. What is more, you never know when you will meet a friend.

I am a lucky person, because I know for sure I can count on my friend. Once, we were celebrating the Holiday of Winter. It was in our central park near the river. As the river was frozen we decided to have kebabs right on it. Suddenly, the ice cracked and I went underwater. My classmates were scared and ran away, except for one. Tom pulled me out and saved my life. I do not need any other proofs of his friendship.

It is no secret that friendships are based on trust, and if that’s betrayed, the whole relationship breaks down. Falling for the same guy, revealing your secrets, cheating, and backstabbing lead to breaking up. Thus, we should admit our failures, practise forbearance and be willing to learn something new. And we’ll avoid breaking up friendships over petty differences.

To be honest, I don’t need a wide circle of friends. I prefer one or two close friends, even though I know many people and have a large number of acquaintances. And I am sure that having a small group of friends gives you a better chance to cultivate deep and meaningful relationships.

To sum up, I have to state that I am in total agreement with those who considered friendship to be a vital part of our life.

Dear Kate,

I’ve just received your letter and I’m sorry to hear that your parents make you read the books you don’t like.

As for me, my parents don’t tell me what to read. I am free to enjoy reading anything to my liking, provided I have coped with everything that is on the school curriculum. You know, my family are great readers, and my parents often advise and suggest me some interesting books to read.

Strange it might seem I’m an avid reader of historical novels. This is just my opinion, of course, but there’s something greatly entertaining about diving into a book set in a past time period. It’s like stepping into a time machine and being transported back to days when people acted and thought differently, technology wasn’t quite as advanced, and so on. I also admire science fiction and fantasy, because they show me a world I could never see or experience for myself.

In the first place, I manage to get something entertaining and exciting to read from my parents. As I have already mentioned, they are keen on reading and often buy new books. In the second place, we exchange books with my friends. I sometimes download books, or even borrow them from the library, though some consider it to be old-fashioned.

Dear Mr. Brown,

I am writing to you to find out some details of my stay with a host family and give you some information about myself.

To begin with I would appreciate if the room I will live in is rather spacious and light. It will be great if it has a balcony and commands a wonderful view of a garden or a flowerbed.

In terms of furniture, I will be glad to have a comfortable writing table with a reading lamp, a few bookshelves, a single bed with a bedside table, and a wardrobe to keep my clothes. I find it important to have a personal computer, as it will be much easier for me to get ready for my classes, as well as some sports facilities to do some exercise in my free time.

As for my roommate, I would like her to be easy-going, friendly, sociable and sincere. I also like intelligent people with a good sense of humour. Her being cheerful, polite, and well-bred will be also essential for me.

I hope this information will be useful to you.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks a lot for all your news. I’m glad that you are doing well. Things are very much as normal here.

I find it great that you have made up your mind to start doing an additional kind of sport. It’s a kind of another opportunity to keep your body fit and strong, to boost your immune system, and even self-confidence, and, a result, to maintain good health.

Nowadays being sound and in good shape is getting more and more popular with young people, and my friends are not an exception. Some of them are keen football players, and they do not miss a single chance to play their favourite game. Others are fond of jogging, cycling, and swimming. There are certainly those who are crazy about tennis or basketball, and play these games year-round. But some of my friends, as they say, prefer to train their brains and therefore play chess. 

I, for one, adore figure skating, and do my best to watch figure skating championships on TV. I am a kind of obsessed with yoga, so I try my hardest to do it regularly, as I do believe that regular exercise improves health and fitness.

It has been nice writing to you. Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks a lot for dropping me a line. I was really over the moon when I saw your letter. It’s great that you are fine. I’m so grateful to you that you have agreed to meet me at the airport and help me during my stay in London. 

In my last letter to you I wrote that I was flying to London on the 12th of July. My flight details are BA631 which lands at 2.45 in the afternoon at Heathrow.

I hope you will easily recognise me in the crowd. I’m a tallish, slim and slender girl in my late teens. I have abundant jet black hair swept back in a ponytail. As for my distinguishing features I have a beauty spot above my upper lip, and I wear glasses. I will be dressed in a sky blue jacket, a white t-shirt with a picture of the gold trident (the official coat of arms of Ukraine), blue jeans, and white tennis shoes. I will carry a read backpack and a dark brown suitcase.

I’m really looking forward to going on a sightseeing tour of London. I want to visit such famous landmarks as the British museum, the Tower of London and certainly Buckingham Palace. I’m also dreaming of a ride on the London Eye. In addition, I would also like to attend a British film festival that is taking place in London during my visit. I think it’s a good idea, as it will be an excellent opportunity to practise my English and to see films which might not be available at home.

Dear Tom!

Thank you so much for your letter. It was really interesting to read about your trip to Spain. Sorry, it took me so long to answer you, but I have been very busy lately studying for External Evaluation.

But now I’m taking a short break, and I want to tell you about my last trip to Odessa. All my class took part in the excursion, so last month we spent two weeks in this beautiful city. There were 18 of us, that’s why we sometimes had disagreements on what to do or where to go, though we usually get along with each other quite well.

Now, after our trip, I have a clear idea of an ideal travelling companion. It should be someone very punctual because it’s important not to miss your train or plane. Besides, it’s easier to deal with people who have a good sense of humour, as it helps to cheer up on long journeys or when waiting for a delayed flight.

From my experience, I’d like to share with you some tips on avoiding conflicts with your travelling companions. First of all, you should have a very detailed plan of your trip before you start out. In this case you won’t argue about where to go. It’s also very important that both you and your travelling companion learn to compromise, and then you are sure to resolve any conflict.

Well, that’s all for now. I must be going because I promised to help my Dad. Write back soon. I’m looking forward to hearing from you asap.
